Properties:
Cationic polyacrylamide plays a pivotal supporting role in the oilfield extraction industry. Though used in significantly lower volumes than anionic flooding agents, it remains indispensable across three critical fronts: water control, mud cleanliness, and well stability.
High-cationic-degree (20-70%) cationic polyacrylamide prioritizes neutralizing negative charges in clay, drill cuttings, and emulsified oil droplets in produced fluids. This enables rapid demulsification and flocculation.
Medium-to-high molecular weight (6-12 million) cationic polyacrylamide balances “bridging” and “viscosity enhancement.” It maintains over 70% viscosity retention in injection water at 60-90°C with mineralization below 30 g/L.
Cationic polyacrylamide exhibits low degradation in acidized residual fluids or high-hardness reinjection water at pH 3-10 and Ca2+ concentrations ≤ 2000 mg/L. It shows no significant precipitation when blended with quaternary ammonium salts or glutaraldehyde. Field blending is feasible.

Application:
1. Oil-Contaminated Wastewater Treatment (Prior to Off-Site “Tertiary Recovery” Reinjection)
Function: Demulsification-Flocculation-Floating to achieve oil content ≤ 5mg/L and suspended solids ≤ 3mg/L. Meets SY/T 5329 reinjection standards. Can replace 30-50% PAC and reduce sludge volume by 20%.
Recommended dosage: 3-10 mg/L. First add PAC at 50-100 mg/L, then add CPAM as a coagulation aid.
2. Separation of Chemical Flooding Produced Fluids
Forms “positive-negative synergy” with anionic oil displacement agents, accelerating polymer-oil-solid three-phase separation. Reduces subsequent settling tank load by 15-25%.
Recommended dosage: 5-15 mg/L. Add simultaneously with or 30 seconds after the anionic oil displacement agent.
3. Drilling Waste Mud and Fracturing Flowback Water Dewatering
When used with centrifuges or screw presses, reduces mud water content from 85% to 55-60%. Mud cake meets GB 18598 disposal requirements.
Recommended dosage: 1-3 kg per ton of dry sludge. Dry sludge volume is calculated based on 15% solids content.
4. Wellbore Clay Swelling Prevention and Sand Control
Low molecular weight CPAM (< 5 million) acts as a “clay stabilizer.” At 0.2-0.5% concentration, it suppresses expansion in water-sensitive formations, enhancing wellbore integrity.
Recommended dosage: 0.2-0.5% solution. Pumped during the displacement phase with a contact time of >30 minutes.
5. Acidizing/Fracturing Viscosity Enhancement
Blended with plant-based gums. Improves acid fluid sand-carrying capacity by 10-15%. Reduces friction resistance by 5-8%.
Recommended dosage: 0.1-0.3% solution. When blended with colloids, achieve an on-site viscosity of 30-50 mPa·s.
